WHAT IS VIN ETCHING?

VIN etching is the permanent engraving of a vehicle’s federally registered vehicle identification number (VIN) onto its windshield and windows. VIN etching is often seen as a deterrent to thieves because it not only makes it nearly impossible for thieves to profit from selling windows and windshields, but it also makes it more difficult for thieves to find a way to dispose of the vehicle once it has been stolen. As a result, VIN etching is recommended by police and insurance agencies to protect against auto theft. The process to have your car VIN etched if fairly simple and takes only a few minutes. Typically, the process includes developing a stencil of your VIN number which is then used with glass etching paste to engrave the number onto the windows of your vehicle.

SHOULD MY VEHICLE/MOTORCYCLE BE ETCHED?

Whether your vehicle/motorcycle should be etched depends upon your individual preference. However, statistics maintained
by law enforcement agencies indicate that vehicles which have been etched are less likely to be the target of professional car thieves.

HOW MUCH CAN BE CHARGED FOR VIN ETCHING OR MARKING OF COMPONENT PARTS?

A dealer/lease company may charge a reasonable rate but no more than the rate filed with the DMV. A company must file its rates with DMV each time a change occurs with a rate. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF VIN ETCHING?

VIN Etching is one of the most simple and most effective ways to deter car thieves. VIN Etching makes a vehicle less attractive to thieves because police can accurately identify a stolen car more easily. VIN Etching also makes a car less valuable to a thief because the all of the car’s windows would have to be replaced before a thief could attempt to sell the car or its parts.

Cars that have been VIN Etched have a 64% lower theft rate that non-Etched cars. And, a VIN Etched car has a more than an 85% chance of recovery if it is stolen. In fact, VIN Etching is so effective that many insurance companies will offer discounts on premiums for VIN Etching a vehicle.
